{"id":6,"date":"2013-12-07T03:14:52","date_gmt":"2013-12-07T03:14:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sookfong.com\/?page_id=6"},"modified":"2025-06-05T18:45:34","modified_gmt":"2025-06-05T18:45:34","slug":"about","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/sookfong.com\/?page_id=6","title":{"rendered":"About"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jen Sookfong Lee writes, edits, and sometimes sings badly on a podcast.<\/p>\n<p>In 2007,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.randomhouse.ca\/author\/results.pperl?authorid=75356\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Knopf Canada<\/a>\u00a0published Jen\u2019s first novel,<em>The End of East<\/em>, as part\u00a0of its\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.randomhouse.ca\/newface\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New\u00a0Face of Fiction<\/a>\u00a0program.\u00a0Hailed as \u201can emotional powerhouse of a novel,\u201d\u00a0<em>The\u00a0End of East<\/em>\u00a0shines a light on the Chinese Canadian story,\u00a0the repercussions of immigration and the\u00a0city of Vancouver.<\/p>\n<p>Called \u201cstraight-ahead page-turning brilliance\u201d by\u00a0<em>The National Post\u00a0<\/em>and shortlisted for the City of Vancouver Book Award,<em>\u00a0The Better Mother<\/em>, Jen\u2019s sophomore novel, was published by Knopf in May 2011. Set in Vancouver during the\u00a0mid-20th century\u00a0and early 1980s,\u00a0<em>The Better Mother<\/em>\u00a0is about the accidental friendship between Miss Val, a longtime burlesque dancer, and Danny Lim, a wedding photographer trying to reconcile his past with his present.<\/p>\n<p>Jen&#8217;s third novel for adults, <em>The Conjoined<\/em>, was published by <a href=\"http:\/\/ecwpress.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ECW Press<\/a> in September 2016 and was nominated for the International Dublin Literary Award and was a finalist for the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize. A literary crime novel, it follows a social worker, Jessica Campbell, as she unravels the mysterious deaths of two foster sisters who lived with her family in the 1980s. Hailed as &#8220;complex, refreshing, and relevant,&#8221; by <em>The Globe &amp; Mail<\/em>, <em>The Conjoined<\/em> is the final title in Jen&#8217;s Chinatown trilogy.<\/p>\n<p><em>Gentlemen of the Shade<\/em>, Jen&#8217;s first creative non-fiction title, was published in 2017 by <a href=\"https:\/\/ecwpress.com\/products\/gentlemen-of-the-shade#:~:text=Gentlemen%20of%20the%20Shade%20examines,gender%20constructs%2C%20and%20social%20responsibility.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ECW Press<\/a>, and is a pop culture love letter addressed to her favourite film, <em>My Own Private Idaho<\/em> by Gus Van Sant. Her forthcoming memoir in essays, <a href=\"https:\/\/quillandquire.com\/omni\/daily-deals-ms-acquires-non-fiction-from-jen-sookfong-lee-mark-medley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Superfan<\/em><\/a>, explores Jen&#8217;s ongoing relationship with pop culture, and touches on grief and loss, intergenerational conflict, and, of course, the Kardashians. <em>Superfan<\/em> is forthcoming in Spring 2022 with McClelland &amp; Stewart.<\/p>\n<p>In 2011, Jen published <em>Shelter<\/em>, her first children&#8217;s title. <em>Shelter<\/em>, a novella for young adults, was published in February 2011 as part of <a href=\"http:\/\/site.annickpress.com\/catalog\/catalog.aspx?title=Dead%20Time\/Shelter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Annick Press\u2019 Single Voice series<\/a>. It follows a young girl as she struggles to balance her first and dangerous love affair with a difficult and demanding family.<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orcabook.com\/Chinese-New-Year-P1303.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Orca Books<\/a> published <em>Chinese New Year: A Celebration for Everyone<\/em>, a middle grade non-fiction book that uses Jen&#8217;s own childhood memories to explore the history of China&#8217;s most famous holiday. The following year, Jen published a companion baby book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orcabook.com\/The-Animals-of-Chinese-New-Year-P1874.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The Animals of Chinese New Year<\/em><\/a>, which tells the ancient story of how the Chinese zodiac began.<\/p>\n<p>In March 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orcabook.com\/Finding-Home-P4849.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Finding Home: The Journey of Immigrants and Refugees<\/em><\/a> was released. A middle grade non-fiction book, <em>Finding Home<\/em> explains the history of and current day reality for immigrants and refugees worldwide and is the inaugural title in Orca&#8217;s <em>Think<\/em> series, which takes on complex topics for children.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bookstore.wolsakandwynn.ca\/products\/the-shadow-list\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Shadow List<\/em><\/a>, Jen&#8217;s first poetry collection, was published by Buckrider Books in April 2021. Called &#8220;compulsively readable&#8221; by <em>The Georgia Straight<\/em> and &#8220;vividly, gorgeously alive&#8221; by <em>The Vancouver Sun<\/em>, <em>The Shadow List<\/em> is filled with desire, where we question the politics of who gets to choose and who doesn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>Jen&#8217;s first memoir, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/sookfong.com\/?p=557\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Superfan: How Pop Culture Broke My Heart<\/a><\/em>, was published by McClelland &amp; Stewart in 2023, becoming an instant bestseller before being a named a Best Book of 2023 by both the <em>Globe &amp; Mail<\/em> and Apple Books. Called &#8220;a dazzling, kaleidoscopic memoir&#8221; by the <em>Toronto Star<\/em>, <em>Superfan<\/em> was also featured on the <em>Today Show<\/em>, <em>The Social<\/em>, and <em>eTalk<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In September 2025, Jen returns to fiction with <em><a href=\"http:\/\/sookfong.com\/?p=584\">The Hunger We Pass Down<\/a><\/em>, publishing with McClelland &amp; Stewart in Canada and Erewhon Books in the US. A literary horror novel that &#8220;is the kind of book that eats your sleep,&#8221; <em>The Hunger We Pass Down<\/em> is about intergenerational trauma, motherhood, and the family ghosts we can never outrun.<\/p>\n<p>A familiar voice on radio and podcasts, Jen was a columnist for CBC Radio One\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/onthecoast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">On the Coast<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/allpointswest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">All Points West,<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/thenextchapter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Next Chapter<\/a> for many years and was also a frequent co-host of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/bc\/bookclub\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Studio One Book Club<\/a>. She also taught fiction at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfu.ca\/continuing-studies\/programs\/the-writers-studio-online\/why-this-program.html\">The Writers&#8217; Studio Online<\/a> at Simon Fraser University and co-hosted the literary podcast, <a href=\"https:\/\/cantlit.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Can&#8217;t Lit<\/a>, with Dina Del Bucchia. Currently, she acquires and edits for <a href=\"https:\/\/ecwpress.com\/pages\/jen-sookfong-lee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ECW Press<\/a>.
